HAARP: Instrument of Destruction?

The United States Navy and Air Force have joined with the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, to build a prototype for a Star Wars weapons system located in Gakona, Alaska. Called HAARP, an acronym for High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program, this technology is a powerful transmitter that focuses and heats parts of the ionosphere with radio wave beams. The electromagnetic waves thus produced bounce back, penetrating deep into the earth to locate underground munitions, minerals and tunnels. This capability of HAARP to penetrate the earth's surface to a depth of several kilometers is the earth-penetrating-tomography project, which the United States Senate funded in 1996. The signals broadcast by the HAARP transmitters consist of multiple megawatt power pulses but is confined to a sharp narrow beam which is focused upward above the Gakona facility at the region where the Van Allen Radiation Belts or the shell of the magnetosphere intersect the atmosphere. This region is called the Auroral Jet. As the particles from the sun in the radiation belts impact the ionosphere, they are suddenly forced sideways by the rotation of the atmosphere around the earth. This is, in effect, a large polar electric accelerating current at both the north and south magnetic poles and is the major component of the earth's magnetic field. The placement of the HAARP facility directly under the auroral jet makes it unique and ideal for modulating the jet and thus producing a communication signal which can be received anywhere in the world where the magnetic field can be sensed.

Unfortunately, the ability to penetrate and communicate beneath the ocean and earth, plus HAARP's global missle tracking capability represents a military technological advance which is classified "Top Secret", so no information about the purpose or methods of the HAARP ULF technology has been released to the public. This means that groups which monitor such signals have not been informed that the Navy is now the largest producer of ULF signals in the world, nor are they notified about the times or source of the broadcasts nor the nature of the modulation.

One of the problems with this technology is that the frequency needed for earth- penetrating radiation is also within the frequency range that disrupts human mental function and effects the migration patterns of animals that rely on the earth's magnetic field. The location of the HAARP facility near the magnetic north pole is also a cause for concern. Aside from the dangers inherent in creating holes in the protective layer of the atmosphere which shields us from deadly solar radiation, disruptions in the ionosphere at that latitude could produce a wobble in the earth's magnetic field. Opponents to HAARP claim that, unlike other ionospheric transmitters, such as the one at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, this facility operates at levels that approach the maximum capability of radio frequencies to dissipate and are in danger of triggering runaway plasma processes in the ionosphere.

Further, they claim that the Air Force is using the transmitter to manipulate and disturb human mental processes through pulsed radio-frequency radiation over large geographical areas. They point to the writings of Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Advisory to U.S. President Carter, and Geophysicist J.F. MacDonald, science advisor to U.S. President Johnson, which discuss the use of power-beaming transmitters for geophysical and environmental warfare. Professor MacDonald, a specialist in problems of warfare, is quoted as saying that "accurately-timed, artificially-excited electronic strokes could lead to a pattern of oscillations that produce relatively high power levels over certain regions of the earth ... in this way one could develop a system that would seriously impair the brain performance of very large populations in selected regions over an extended period." Professor MacDonald goes on to describe the use of weather and climate modification that could affect the polar ice caps, deplete the ozone, cause earthquakes, control ocean waves and manipulate brain waves, all using the planetary energy fields.

The U.S. Air Force itself claims that "The potential applications of artificial electromagnetic fields are wide-ranging and can be used in many military or quasi- military situations... Some of these potential uses include dealing with terrorist groups, crowd control, controlling breaches of security at military installations, and antipersonnel techniques in tactical warfare. In all of these cases the electromagnetic systems would be used to produce mild to severe physiological disruption or perceptual distortion or disorientation. In addition, the ability of individuals to function could be degraded to such a point that they would be combat ineffective.

"Another advantage of electromagnetic systems is that they can provide coverage over large areas with a single system. They are silent and countermeasures to them may be difficult to develop... One last area where electromagnetic radiation may prove of some value is in enhancing abilities of individuals for anomalous phenomena."

Existing evidence also indicates that exposure to environmental level 50 - 60 Hz EMFs (electro-magnetic-fields) may be an immune system stressor with the potential to cause hormone disruption and changes at a cellular level. Therefore, EMF exposure should be evaluated as a potential risk factor for people suffering from disorders with the common feature of unexplained chronic fatigue. CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME (CFS) is a general label used to describe a debilitating illness, the cause of which is still unknown. CFS is also referred to as CFIDS (Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome), CEBV (Chronic Epstein-Barr Virus) and ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), as well as several other designations.

In a paper linking Chronic Fatigue Syndrome to prolonged exposure to Electromagnetic fields, published in August, 1999, the authors stated; "The evidence we have so far reviewed would suggest a link between EMFs and calcium levels, melatonin levels, protein kinase and ODC activity. Thus it is not unreasonable to conclude that CFS, which may be an indicator of metabolic disruption, is partly a manifestation of exposure to low level EMFs.

"As an indicator of the possibility that exposure to low level 50 - 60 Hz EMFs may play a role in chronic fatigue / immune system dysfunction, we must look for evidence that human exposure to these fields may cause changes at a cellular level, such as hormone disruption and calcium ion efflux, which may have the potential to adversely impact on the immune system." - NCRP DRAFT REPORT GUIDELINES (1995)

The biological effects of EMFs were examined in great detail by an expert committee of the US National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), a congressionally chartered organisation which was contracted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1983 to conduct a review of the biological effects of ELF(extremely-low-frequency) EMFs.

Work was discontinued in 1986 due to funding cuts at the EPA, but resumed in 1991. In early 1995 the draft of the 800-page NCRP report was leaked to the New York based publication Microwave News, which published the report's findings in August 1995. The final report was supposed to be publicly available in early 1996, but has received such intense industry opposition to its findings that its final outcome remains uncertain. The Committee's membership was described by chairman Dr. Ross Adey as "carefully selected to cover the great majority of societal interests on this scientific problem, including power industry engineers, epidemiologists, public health specialists as well as molecular and cellular biologists".

During the Gulf War, electromagnetic waves such as ELF and HAARP were used for tracking maneuvers and other breakman trials (studies conducted to primarily assess weaponry, but not the effects on humans), both in the United States and the Gulf. These waves affect every aspect of the human brain from Neuroendocrine-Immunological to thought processes to body metabolism, and in general, encompass every symptom of Gulf War Syndrome.

Recently, unusual auroral patterns, disparity in the migratory habits of some animals and earthquake readings which coincide with transmissions from the HAARP facility have lent some credence to environmental concerns. For instance, Dr Elizabeth Rauscher, whose field is high-energy physics, has pointed to the possibility of catalytic reactions in the ionosphere as a consequence of this activity. Another physicist, Dr Daniel Winter, states that the high-frequency transmissions from HAARP could interact with the natural ELFpulses of the biosphere to cause unexpected side effects.

On February 28, 2001, a deep magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred in the Seattle, WA. - Vancouver, B.C. area. HAARP began bombarding the earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere at very high signals on February 17 in conjunction with US bombing in Iraq and continued until the day of the earthquake, February 28. Looking at data correlations between ultra low frequency electromagnetic and seismic signals, the anomalous profile of the Seattle-Vancouver earthquake indicates that it could have been triggered by electromagnetic ionization. The earthquake was a 6.8 magnitude earthquake at a depth of 40 miles, which, in the words of one observer, "looked like a 3.0 magnitude."

ELFRAD, a group that monitors electromagnetic events, admitted that HAARP operations may have "inadvertently" affected the earthquake. HAARP currently functions as a global missile-tracking facility by ionizing and disrupting both the ionosphere and the magnetosphere. The magnetosphere is vital to the stability of the tectonic plates that float on the surface of the earth. By disrupting the magnetosphere, HAARP could cause tectonic instabilities, i.e., earthquakes. Short wave radio operators in Seattle state that unusual electromagnetic broadcasts preceded the Seattle - Vancouver earthquake. One researcher monitoring the electromagnetic broadcasts prior to the earthquake picked up a signal so strong "it went right off the S meter on my SW set at that frequency at 6:00 am on Feb 20th. Took an audio sampling of half an hour but can't make hide or hair of what HAARP is broadcasting, just that it's STRONG."

Another Seattle-based researcher, Kent Steadman, reported electromagnetic activity just prior to and during the earthquake, receiving signals at 153 MHz. Steadman noted that he "helped install seismic monitoring stations in California in the early 90's. They are designed as an early warning system in detecting earth movements prior to a big quake. Several of these were in the 153-154 band. They send data, but during a big shift they send a screeching sounding data burst." The ELFRAD group recorded intense activity from .02 to .036 hertz 473 minutes prior to the Washington quake - and 4 minutes earlier, there was another quake registering 5.4 off the coast of Central America.

Researchers have also found that the HAARP electromagnetic signal carries within it another, hidden signal, at a frequency which affects the limbic system in the human brain. The limbic system manages emotions and mood and is a target of mind control. Some of these researchers believe that mood management of human populations may be happening through these hidden frequencies. On February 17, just 11 days prior to the Seattle earthquake, according to ELFRAD a ".9 Hz signal, which... may be related to limbic activation in the brain, occurred during the transmission, lasting a very unusual 42 minutes on Saturday, 17 Feb 2001."

On July 6, 2001, unusual electronic interference caused a major disruption to the operation of the local radio station and the offices of the weekly newspaper in Hartsville, Tennessee, a small town located near a former nuclear power plant which, residents claim, is being operated as a clandestine installation. Residents in Hartsville claim the secret project is being paid for by the U.S. Air Force and uses U.S. government aircraft as transportation. Eyewitness reports of the covert activities include sightings of military aircraft flying over the facility, unmarked black helicopters monitoring the area, military troops in unmarked black uniforms and multiple reports of black triangular craft hovering over the site. The electromagnetic blast which caused the power transformer malfunction was accompanied with a flashing blue pulse similar to the discharge of electromagnetic pulse weapons, and an audible electronic hum, also a clear electronic signature of an electromagnetic weapons attack. Surges during the event, according to WJKM spokespersons, not only came into the power lines, they also entered the radio station through the phone lines and the antenna system, as demonstrated by the blown telephone equipment. The carcasses of dead birds littered a mile-square area around the radio station and residents have since experienced adverse health effects, especially in fibromyalgia, a condition whose symptoms include unexplainable severe and disabling pain throughout the entire body, as well as an increase in headaches similar to migraines. An earthquake measuring 2.4 on the Richter scale struck the area on July 7, the day following the event. Station officials claim that both the electronic event that took out the station's transmitter and the unusual earthquake were accompanied by massive anomalous bursts of electromagnetic pulse energy from the HAARP facility in Alaska.

According to a station spokesperson, " At about 10:45 AM Friday [July 6], radio station WJKM and CMR (Country Music Radio), with studios in Hartsville, Tennessee, was knocked off the air by a very powerful strange energy blast! There was a crystal clear blue sky, no clouds or rain. It was not lightning... All the radio station's lines were knocked out. Several power transformers were blown several blocks away from the studios (smoke seen billowing out of one). All phone lines at the newspaper (The Hartsville Vidette), the local farm co-op and all other phones in this small radius were knocked out! Radio station transmitter lost all MOSFETS and the output - tuning network. All computers at WJKM lost motherboards, network cards etc. ISDN was knocked out. Most all the equipment, Zephyr, codec and EAS, all knocked out." Environmental impact studies have warned that electromagnetic weapons such as HAARP could superheat the ionosphere, and substantially damage or destroy it in a runaway ecological process. Despite strong opposition from environmentalists, Congress approved HAARP, following the Navy's assurance that its operation would not trigger climate change or seismic events such as the two reported above. If it can be established that HAARP or any other electromagnetic installation contributed to these events, the negative environmental impacts are on such an unprecedented scale that they would constitute blatant violations of the 1977 United Nations Treaty against Environmental Modification and severely debase the credibility of the United States in the world community.
